Layer organization TLK4 by Katikut Layer organization TLK4 by Katikut
My WIP (work in progress) for TLK4. I had some information about layer organization with this sort of work. It may seem simple, but I know a lot of person are not very 'friends' with this system :)

why do you make for every color a new layer?? That's really not necessary, you only can use layers for the lineart, the flat colors and shading (and maybe highlights) :p

I'm a professionnal illustrator, and I experimented this problem so many times... I almost ALWAYS need to change some colors. Sometimes I realize that my skin colors isn't really beautiful chen it's next my hair color... SO i use the hue/saturation settings only for the color I want to change, because it's on a single layer. You have to be very confident to put every colors on one layer. I admire you :)

Now I don't use the burn tool. I create a new layer, and generally put a color with a multiply option ;)

Salut!

I love your line art and I have a quick question, that may or may not have been asked already. Do you create all of the lines as one thickness and then go in and erase to make different line weights or do you change the width of the pen as you go?

I use a tablet, so the pressure is automatic :)

I have a Wacom Graphire4, and CS2. When you said pen tool, did you mean the pen tool in CS2 or the tablet's pen? And if you meant the CS2 pen tool, then what brush settings do you use? I don't want to be a pest; I just want my line art to be as good as yours. :D

I'm converted. *sigh* My teacher drills it into us that the layers are our friends but I never saw a sufficient reason to really use them. Nicely done.

oh you have no idea how much this helps me! I've always heard people talk about colouring with layers, but never known how, and this clears that up a lot! In fact, I even posted a help thing about it in the forum, but nobody answered that part XD FINALLY I can learn how to use this stuff! lol thank you very much. And I agree with everyone else, you speak excellent english. My french on the other hand...well let's just say that when I go to Quebec next year in my french class, I'll probably end up accidentally telling someone on the street that their smelly cat is very lovely XD lol merci boucoup, arvoir! (and don't even get me started on my french spelling skills XD)

You're amazing on photoshop. So all of your rough sketches are on the computer??
I have to do it on paper, scan in, outline and so on. Is the pen tool hard to use??

:iconkatikut:

oh no! the majority of my sketches are done n paper, scanned, and inked digitally :)
The pen tool need a little training, but it's very simple! Try it!

How did you fill in the colour if the outline was on a different layer?
Reply
:iconkatikut:
Katikut Featured By Owner Aug 2, 2006  Professional Digital Artist
I don't use the pot. I paint under the outlines, and rubb if the color goes out the outlines (I don't know f I can say that in english). The advantage of using different layers is that you don't risk to endomage your lineart.

Cool. I'm amazed you can use the pen tool so well! I just don't get it :P

Do you scan in the outline and go over it in black?

:iconkatikut:

it depends, but generally I don't ink with the traditionnal method. All is drawn with the computer. But sometimes I do my sketch, scan it, and make new outlines on an upper layer. I don't know if it clear again XD

How you can made so straight and plain lines? When I use my photoshop CS2 and table (brush tool), my lines are uneven and messy. Or is it just my hand... o.o

J'comprends mieux tout à coup l'histoire du line avec la plume.
Quoi qu'il y a une chose qui reste un peu étrange ou du moins pas encore compris.. le fond t'as mis comben de temps pour le faire, on dirait vraiment une peinture du film..
