It's been a while since I post something. I tried to have a break during christmas.
I did this little "peau d'ane" thing this morning. I wanted to draw these 3 dresses for ages!
A dress "couleur du temps" (weather color), couleur de lune (moon color) and couleur du soleil (sun color)

I don't know if this movie was translated into english, but I used to watch it again and again when I was younger.

:: FR ::

That was one of my favourite fairy tales. It wasn't a mainstream, over-elaborated one. It was a bit like Cinderella, but no fairy godmother here; the girl got things by using her wits. It was as realistic as a fairy tale could get, and these dresses are lovely.

Ah the movie and the story is wonderful indeed! And yes, the movie is in english too, it's called "Donkeyskin" if I remember correct. And looked it up on Wikipedia: [link]

Wonderful dresses! The weather one I always imagined actually changing it's look or colors like weather, and with mood of the owner :)

I don't know about the movie, but I've read the story many times in fairy tale books. There's also more than one version. Like one where she wears a donkey's coat, and another made out of reeds... Which one did the movie have??

what exactly is "the color of weather"? did they mean grey, like cloudy grey? you have rendered it as the color of a blue sky with clouds... i am confused.

I don't know the exact translation. In french the weather can be "rainy, sunny, snowy"... The weather is the weather. There's no other word in french. So I used the ony onbe I knew. Does the weather in english only means a grey sky?

When the princess asks her father for a "weather color", she precises that she wants the color of a beautiful day. And when the dress is finally made, you can see clouds passing on it. What would be the exact expression? :)

ok, because of what the princess said, i can see now why you chose blue. i don't believe the phrase, "weather-colored" actually occurs in english, so this may be one of those idiomatic phrases that don't translate exactly. i any event, the art is beautiful. you do have a wonderful sense of costuming and set design. =)

i just read this fairy tale, in my book the complete works of the brothers grimm! it was called the princess in disguise, but it was a little different.the dresses were the moon, the sun,and the stars. and he also asked for a mantle made with skin of all the animals in the kingdom.

I've heard once that Grimm bothers used to re-write some stories wich already existed. I've found this on wikipedia:
Cinderella, sleeping beauty, Le petit chaperon rouge (I don't know the english title. The little girl in red, with a wolf and a grand mother...)
These ones were from Charles Perraut, a french writter. Grimm brothers have only reuses old stories. I was eally desappointed when I discovered this facts :(

Peau d'ane (donkey skin, is maybe the original story of the princess in disguise?

Yes, yes, in more than a few cases the versions of Perrault are the older documented one, the collection of the Brothers Grimm came later.

But! The version also differ, sometimes more, sometimes less. As far as I know (!) because brothers Grimm claimed to travel around and collected the stories from all kind of people who liked to tell them, they didn't take them from Perrault directly. Those peoples who shared their stories ... I guess the more fairy tales are circulating, the more version start to exist from region to region. The German Cinderella has some big differences to the one of Perrault. And then I also know a Russian version which is again different. I think wiki says Cinderella-like stories are already told since thousands of years.
Who told the very first one? We will probably never know.

Some other stories are really for the first time in Grimm's books, not Perrault - I think (!) for example Snow White and also the Frog Prince.

That sounds very familiar... I think the movie you're talking about is based off of a fairy tale. For the moment the name of the fairy tale totally eludes me. But it starts with a princess running away from home or something... ends up living in the forest, hunters think she's some sort of enchanted animal b/c she has this fur coat made from many different animals. She ends up working in the kitchen and each night the prince has a ball she pulls out one of these dresses to wear... more story plot, the prince discovers the kitchen girl is the mysterious girl of his dreams, they wed, happily ever after lol.

It's from the story "Peau d'ane" (donkey skin)
A father wants to marry his daughter (horruble I know) so the girl, helped by her fairy godmother, asks for a weather, then a moon, and finally a sun dress. She hopes her father won't be able to find these 3 dresses, think she's superficial and would renounce. But he success. For the last time, the girl asks the skin of the magical donkey wich is responsible of all the treasures of the kingdom. The father make this sacrifice. So the girl puts on this horruble skin and desapears. She works as a poor girl in a little village where a prince comes, and discoverer that this young girl is a princess. They live happily ever after etc. etc. XD
The end is almost the same :)
