Ok. Now stop it's really annoying.

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 28, 2013, 2:00 PM

1 pic posted. 3 comments: She looks like... She reminds me... It's SO annoying to read this all the time. I'm sorry but sometimes I wish my viewers had imagination. PLEASE READ THE LIMK BELOW TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I REALLY MEAN/FEEL. Thanks a lot <3

>>… << :iconMystyTang:

edit > If you look at my journal I've never said I was feeling insulted. I'm bored, I've just said that it annoys me. Don't transform everything :) Then, if your only goal in life is to be popular on DA, well it's sad. I appreciate every critique. It's just that for me, this kind of comment is not a critique but just something said without any true reflection in the end O_o I've read them for 10 years. I think I've won the right to be annoyed one evening in my life.

I totally relate to this! Just draw what makes you happy and keep going. ;)

It's hard to learn to critique. What they are really saying is, "all of your work looks like Ariel with different hair. Please show more creativity and originality." Ironically, your young viewers are also wishing ~your~ work had more imagination too! If they were not, you would not receive that comment so many times. Expect more of them.

Recently I've made a piece introducing a character that I've been working on for a little while, and so far the comments say, "Oh hey! it looks like that girl from Metal Gear!"

Now, I feel this situation is a little different, since I did not know this character and was not inspired by that character to make my own. (I was instead inspired by the very attractive art styles and characters of *nargyle and `cheeks-74) So at this point, it doesn't bother me much, especially since I've only one piece of my character and I haven't shown my development sketches of her.

But I do understand your frustration; some people just don't realize where the real inspiration came from.

Ive always found it odd because it certainly isnt a compliment.. not sure there is a point to saying it..
and especially when they're really reaching!
"this looks just like Sakura if her hair was black and she was a large man"

sooo.. not at all?

I don't take it as a critique, negative or positive. For me it's just someone who needs to say "something". :(

You said it perfectly and I agree 100%!!!

Ah... wow.

And here I try so hard just to get people to LEAVE constructive comments instead of just favoriting stuff and fading away into the background.

I know originality is everything, but there is NOTHING new under the sun. Something will always remind you of something else. I don't understand why this is insulting. Isn't it incredible to know that your work has set off a trigger in someone, touched them deeply, even if it's because it reminds them of something else that causes the same response?

...Not trying to start an argument. Just trying to quell the rage and doubt you may feel when you hear those comments. You are OBVIOUSLY a talented artist... and just because a person may not be able to sum up why your work is on par with the Mona Lisa with originality of phrasing... you CAN'T POSSIBLY doubt yourself.

I don't know why people keep speaking of an insult. I've never said that :) It's just annoying. I've been reading this kind of comment for 10 years. I can't even say that I don't like critique :( It's just that it's annoying now -_-.
Lagger2 Featured By Owner Jan 31, 2013
I guess it was the aggressive rant that makes if FEEL like you are deeply insulted. But if that isn't the case, then I guess it's just a misunderstanding.

When I first saw your work on deviant, I admit that I saw a piece that reminded me of a style that I liked that I had seen before. So I clicked on your gallery to see if you had more. But I found a wide ARRAY of talent and imagination much that I had to follow you. I think you are so talented and have a great body of work and I patiently await for your next amazing endeavors....

...But my admiration all started with a piece that reminded me of something else. And I'm sure it is the same for others when they say a comment like that. Yah know? It's not the most IDEAL comment to read over and over... but at least you know that you are reaching out and touching people with your work! ^_^

I actually said this before to an artist with out thinking. I knew it was griefing to hear that so I felt guilt and bought two of his prints he had. I was stopped on my run thru a convention. He asked me if I liked it because I was was probably looking at it a bit long as I walked bye. So I stopped and looked at it again and said I liked the enlarged foot that poked the depths of the piece. At the time I never seen much digital art. So I said it looked like a similar style to a favorite artist. I would have never said such a thing, bu in all defense he stopped me and asked and I ran off feeling bad. good grief :/

You know—for that recent piece, I would say that it is one of your most original and most out of your usual style.

I know that this will not end after your journal, but still, at least you can feel that there are other people who think this kind of comment is totally useless and dumb : )

I totally get that. I spend three years years writing a manuscript and one of the first people that read it told me it was just like another novel they'd read. It was like being punched in the creative gut. So I spent three years writing something that's already been done!? T-T Yeah, I totally get where you're coming from. Even as a compliment, these statements suck!
issabissabel Featured By Owner Jan 29, 2013  Student General Artist
I get that sometimes, I also find it annoying, but really?

Deal with it. People will always be dicks anyway, if you cannot handle your art being looked upon that way, don't post it.

-from an artist with dick friends who's comments actually hurt more than "she looks like"-

Ugh, I get that ALL. THE. TIME. Every single pic I post. And any fan art I do, I get the comment "I love how so-and-so looks as a Disney Princess/Prince". As if that's what I tried to do. One side of me is happy that my work reminds people of other characters they know and love—there's a positive association thing going on—but another side of me gets the life sucked out of it. It's hurtful, but it's a good kind of pain.

Thanks for speaking out. It's annoying as balls. :XD:

And keep up the great work!! LOVE LOVE LOVE your gallery!!!

I don't mind if my character looks like another and someone comments on it, especially if it's another OC. I could see it being hurtful though, in the sense that my character wasn't interesting enough to generate any comment or response or thought other than "Oh this looks like another OC." But I mean, I'm not very popular here, so a comment in a comment in my book. :/

Not even remotely close to the worst thing you could say to another artist.

If it reminds them of something, it reminds them of something.
People see farm animals in clouds, faces in a tree trunk, and a man in the moon.

It's not a slight for someone to say, "Hey this reminds me of such and such."

Study art history and you will find whole schools and art movements done in a similar style.

( Other than comments meant to be hurtful or malicious ) Once you start rejecting feedback that doesn't suit your ego, you slow your growth as an artist.
awrah Featured By Owner Jan 29, 2013
Very well said. Maybe a character really DOES look like so-and-so's character and the artist could listen and figure out WHY and make alterations.
Rogue-Android Featured By Owner Jan 28, 2013
I think there's a big difference between saying that and intending it to be critical, and saying that and intending it to be a compliment. If they say, "this reminds me of _____, therefore, I don't think you're very original" then, well, that's not very nice, but at least they're being honest. But if they say, "this reminds me of _______, and I really love it" then that's very cool, because in their own way, they're trying to tell you that your art is just their type of thing, and they categorize it with all the other things they like.
Perspective is everything.

While I will respect your wishes, (In truth I had an interaction with someone... not tactful or polite who was offended by such a comment, so now I keep all comments to a minimum) I will never understand it.

People function by pattern recognition, continuously comparing elements of each new experience with memories of past ones, so I do not believe that art (creation or appreciation) is any different. The absence of any patterns tends to incite apprehension, unease, or fear in people.

To each his--her own, but I produce work because I love to, ...because I have to. My brain's wired this way. No outsider can critique my work harder than I do to myself, and so I have to disagree with that blogger, I think vocal comparison of work or even outright ridicule, are so far down the list of "bad things" that could happen to an artist, that they rank as mild irritations.

The worst thing that someone can tell an artist is that, "s/he will make it so that the artist can never produce art again" especially if that person actually has the power to back up the threat.

The next worse thing would be theft.

The sting or elation I receive from other's words won't matter if I feel differently about my work, and I don't hold it so precious that I couldn't watch it be destroyed right in front of me and yet still get up tomorrow, and attempt to make more, better work. I am intelligent enough to weed out the blather from the constructive criticism or insight and the day I let people get under my skin about something so personal to me is the day I lay down and die.

I totally agree with you in this. It´s just normal and natural to compare and shouldn´t be judged if someone thinks, that it´s worth a post.
Of course this is not constructive criticism and I also would have less fun reading comments like these

I know exactly what you feel. I put hours into a comic, and now it's being swarmed by comments exactly like that.
billmausart Featured By Owner Jan 28, 2013  Professional Traditional Artist
Well, we can all hug it out and tell each other what we want to hear to make ourselves feel better, I guess. IF, in fact, these are not meant to be "hurtful" or hateful comments and are just the opinions of people who say they love your work, then maybe taking a minute to understand why they feel that way would be the better course of action rather than complaining about it. I really like the art on this page--and if this is kind of thing that is bothering you, I think there are many artists out there who would consider you to be the lucky one:)

This is so freaking true. I hate when people do it. I always get the 'oh this reminds me of this character' which I always have no clue about. And recently I got the "This reminds me of a fanfic I read" I hate when people claim that, it is really hurtful to an artist, people should learn when not to say that
