Olfactory flashbacks

Journal Entry: Wed Nov 13, 2013, 8:53 AM

I wanted to write a funny journal for once :) Because I like to share with my watchers, even on stupid subjects haha!

Does it happen to you too? I mean, smelling a very special smell/perfume that sends you immediatly in your childhood for example? Sometimes you've forgotten them, you think they don't exist anymore, you can't even think of them even if you wanted too.

Here's an example: It happened to me once in the metro. A man, with a bad breath, actually, it was the smell of someone who smokes the pipe. But I had this particular feeling that it was positive. I was even staarting to like this special... smell O_o. Then I remembered. This guy who came at school to play guitar and make us sing when I was 3. The very same smell. O_O I had forgotten him but with this particular (bad) smell, I've even remembered a full song he used to sing!

What a beautiful thing. Your nose I mean!

Some minutes ago, here @ Ubisoft, it smelled a very specific kind of vanilla. It smelled exactly like the essences you put on a little stone to make your room smelling good. Well my cousin used to have this little stone with vanilla perfume in her bedroom when I was 7/8. I've been transported immediatly in this bedroom, I've remembered so many things of this place at the same time. Little details... Unbelievable.

I know, I'm weird O_o

Not weird at all.  Once, a few years ago, my mom told me to close my eyes and taste something. She put some sort of wafer cookie thing in my mouth and asked me if I knew what it was.  It tasted something like strawberries and it was SO familiar, but I could not tell her what it was. I just knew I had tasted it before.  As I tried to think, I finally gave up but told her that it was so familiar but could not remember.  She smiled and showed me the wafers.  She said that she use to feed them to me when I was 2 years old back when we lived in Malaysia.

It's funny that my taste remembered that far back!

That's not weird. Happened to me a few times.

Oddly enough, with a very specific brand of bleach, once. -_-'

My olfactory flashback?  If I smell a particular type of mint, I am reminded of the alginate molding material used for making dental impressions.  I was a dental assistant in the Air Force and worked with dentists who were trying to get their masters degree in dentistry.  I assisted with almost all areas of dentistry except maxillo-facial surgery, but did see a slide presentation about it. . . . .

I love that feeling, actually =P

the hippocampus is right next to the olfactory part of the brain/olfactory nerves! :)

I used to love near a beach when I was younger, so whenever it's rainy or really moist where I live now, I get like a "ghost-smell" of the salty seashore
Neruall Featured By Owner Nov 14, 2013

I've heard before that most humans can remember events from the past from their olfactory sense rather than from sight.
I can't really understand this because I can clearly remember events from the past only from sight. Sight is my main sense. Smell is nothing to me.

My mom makes the most amazing anisette cookies at Christmastime, and anytime I smell anything anise-scented, it immediately makes me think of happy memories with my family at Christmas.  Another smell that brings back a lot of happy memories is the smell of certain musty basements- as a little girl, I would sit on a stool while my grandmother did laundry in her basement; we had so many fun conversations in that little corner of the basement, and all it takes is me walking down those steps to relive all the memories.

Yea, I find that fascinating.  I actually had it with an eczema cream!! :P  I had a flare up last year which was the first time I had it since I was about 4 years old and the smell of the cream just brought back floods of memories of my mum rubbing this cream all over me before taking me to school!  A smell and a memory I thought I had completely forgotten. It's really amazing and it makes you think how many more memories are sleeping in the corner of my brain that could be awoken with a simple scent?

Twizlers licorice takes me back to my grandparents house. We used to always get together Sunday nights back when my cousins and I were all little and my grandma had cancer. We'd all just enjoy each other's company, play card games, and munch on penny candy and licorice.

Also, when I go to ride ET at Universal Orlando, it reminds me of when I had to clock in there for work when our area was being refurbished. The smell of the water there is very distinct, it's a happy smell.

On a less lighthearted note, I had a psychology professor that told our class that he once had a student several years ago who would have a panic attack part way through every class and she didn't know why. Eventually, they figured that a guy who sat in the row behind her wore the same cologne as a man who raped her in high school. Of course, once he was told this, the guy behind her stopped wearing that scent immediately and the girl was fine in that class for the rest of the semester. Olfactory senses and memories are certainly quite powerful.

Oh God O_o I absolutly understand. When I smell the perfume of a man that has hurted me (not like just your friend, my case has nothing to see) my hearts accelerates, I want to go away just to stop smelling this odor... Hugo Boss T_T

I know what you mean! I went to  summer camp, and then a few months later I realized that the smell of Germ-X hand sanitizer brought me back there. Once I got my hands on some I couldn't stop smelling it. :)

I used to have a hemp handcream, and the smell used to sent me right back to when I was 14, walking through my town park to meet my boyfriend. I would nibble nervously on one of my rings, hence I remember the smell! Also, I tend to cycle through body sprays/perfumes, so a certain smell can make me feel like im 16 again getting ready for a party! Smells are very powerful :>

Lithana-Stia Featured By Owner Nov 14, 2013  Student

The opposite works as well. Every time I play the original Mortal Kombat, or even hear the music, I can smell the inside of "Tommy's Burgers and Chinese Takeout" and that place has been closed for years!
quidwitch Featured By Owner Nov 13, 2013
It's not weird. It happens to everyone! There is a type of native new zealand tree that produces a scent that reminds me of kindergarten, and of course things like perfume are a more common reminder of someone. It's interesting..

Oh my goodness yes! For me it's Winter Candy Apple lotion from bath and body works. I remember wearing it for Christmas years ago and playing with my new stuff and feeling all warm and Christmasy. Love Now every time I smell it I'm reminded of Christmas, and I wear it to get pumped up for the holidays. I am a dummy!

It happened to me just today^^ I couldn't join PE today, cause I forgot my sport clothes at home (ooops) so I sat aside, and there were daisy's all around... and it reminded me an camp I used to go to every summer, and the smell was exactly the smell we had there, only with a bit pool smell and freshly baked food^^
Naomi-Bee Featured By Owner Nov 13, 2013  Student Filmographer
That happens to me sometimes!  But usually I can only remember the smell, and not the memory.

That happens to me ALL the time! :la:
